Race to the Top night 1 ROH

Race To the Top Tournament

Night 1

Show starts with a decent promo by Steen (Generico is there as well, not talking much) telling us that if we bet, hes the one to bet on. We’ll see about that Mr.Wrestling.

Pelle Primeau vs B.J Whitmer

- Well this is basically BJ beating the crap out of Pelle for a while and then to my surprise (although I guess I shouldn’t have been) Pelle comes and catches BJ in a small cradle, for the pin. BJ then beats the crap out of Pelle some more and then walks away. Pretty basic with nothing special other than the fact of the surprise upset.

- Match Rating: 4/10

Jigsaw vs Davey Richards

- A pretty decent match actually with some decent back and forth wrestling. Davey continues to work on Jigsaws shoulder/arm throughout the match and in the end catches him in the camorra for the win.

- Match Rating: 6.5/10

Claudio Castagnoli vs Hallowicked

- Not a bad match, pretty short however. Good to see it wasn’t a squash as Hallowicked got in some decent offence before eventually getting caught in a nice Riccola bomb for the win.

- Match Rating: 6/10

Matt Sydal vs Mike Quackenbush

- Pretty decent high flying match with some good wrestling brought to you by Mr.Quackenbush. Didn’t know who was gonna win this one until the end when Quack caught Sydal in what they called a BTS (not really sure what it is) and then a surprise pinfall.

- Match Rating: 7/10

Erick Stevens vs Chris Hero

- Chris Hero plays his role to a tee in this match and really gets under your skin. He is constantly playing with the crowd and his pals from sweet and sour ink. Not a lot of wrestling in this but enough to keep it from being a stupid joke match. In the end Hero catches Stevens with the heros welcoming thanks to interference from his compadres in Sweet and Sour

- 7.5

FIP Heavyweight title match (Non-tournament match)

Gran Akuma vs Jimmy Rave vs Austin Aries vs Roderick Strong (C)

- If Aries hated Strong that much you think that he would have focused on him this whole match but instead he initially goes after him and then sorta forgets that. Decent match with a fair amount of action, but in the end Strong catches Rave in the Strong hold and he taps.

- Match Rating: 7/10

Delirious vs El Generico

Excellent match from these two great wrestlers. Back and forth throughout the whole match and as you would expect, absolutely hilarious. I don’t think anyone expected Generico to pull out a win in this match, but after a heated finish he caught Delirious with a yakuza kick and Brainbuster for the finish.

- Match Rating: 8.5/10

Brent Albright vs Matt Cross

- Decent match with lots of offence from Cross. This match lasted a lot longer than I had expected and actually wasn’t bad at all. In the end Cross gets caught in the crowbar and is forced to tap.

- Match Rating: 6.5/10

Kevin Steen vs Jack Evans

- Not sure what to say about this one. Seemed kind of awkward. Steen didn’t really know what to do with him and this match took place quite a bit on the outside. Another shocker in this one as Steen takes a 630 from Evans for the win.

- Match Rating: 5/10

ROH tag team title match

The Briscoes (C) vs Nigel McGuinness/ Bryan Danielson

- As you would expect, and absolutely fantastic match. Back and forth the whole way and although nobody expected the challengers to win the match, the crowd was definitely into it big time. In the end Danielson smashed McGuinness with an “accidental” roaring elbow leading to a Briscoe rollup for the win.

- Match rating: 8/10

Match of the night was definitely Generico vs Delirious. If your new to ROH then I’d suggest this dvd as it will give you a taste of a lot of the talent on the roster, however if you’re a long time fan, your probably won’t be thrilled with the quality of matches as most of them run less to or around 10 minute

Welcome Shawn.

I just want to welcome my new assistant wrestling reviewer. He just wrote the ROH Tokyo review and I thought it was so wonderful I am going to have him here full time on this.

ROH Live in tokyo!

ROH LIVE IN TOKYO

Jack Evans/ Kotaro Suzuki vs No Remorse Core (Rocky Romero/ Davey Richards)

Suppose to be later in the show, however because of the attack on Delirious, we’re starting the show with it. A good match, especially when it was Romero and Suzuki. Back and forth most of the way with Evans getting only a few of his big spots in. Finish was Romero pinning Evans after massive kicks to the head.

Overall: 6.5/10

Akihiko Ito vs Shuhei Taniguchi

Some solid wrestling between two somewhat green NOAH young boys. Nothing overly impressive in this match. No pinnacle at all and sort of ends out of nowhere. Both could have a future, but they have a long ways to go before then. Finish is a German suplex win for Shuhei Tanihuchi.

Overall: 4/10

Jimmy Rave vs BJ Whitmer

A back and forth match, although you never really believe Whitmer is going to win (Do you really think hes gonna win any match?). This match could have been a lot better had it been given some more time to develop and reach a good pace, but as soon as it picks up Rave hits the pedigree and its over.

Overall: 5.5/10

Go Shiozaki vs Brian Danielson

A very solid wrestling match between two of the best wrestlers in the world today. Back and forth the whole way, and kept it more than a mat style chess game. Really weren’t sure until the ending who was going to win and reached a solid pinnacle before the finish. Many are calling this a match of the year candidate however, I wouldn’t put it that high on the list. It was good, but it wasn’t THAT good. Ending was a tap out by Shiozaki due to cattle mutilation by Danielson.

Overall: 8.5/10

Delirious vs Roderick Strong- Fight without Honor.

A pretty good fight between these two, mixing the Japanese style fight with an ROH style fight to put on one of the best matches of the night. Nice to see Delirious get some redemption in this little feud they have going on. Nothing spectacular happens in this match, nothing too stiff, just a good solid fight. Delirious wins with Chemical Imbalance 2.

Overall: 7/10

Naomichi Marufuji & The Briscoes vs Matt Sydal, Ricky Marvin, & Atsushi Aoki

If you like the excitement and craziness of a 6 man tag then this match is for you. Stays one on one for most of the match, but really breaks down near the end. Some good wrestling and tag team maneuvers, especially out of the Briscoe’s. Finish is doomsday device on Sydal for the pin.

Overall: 7/10

Takeshi Morishima vs Nigel Mcguinness

Another great match in this classic series between them. A pretty stiff match that im sure they both walked away from with many bruises. Nigel really shows his heart in this war, and some crazy high flying stuff. Like I said, awesome match. Nigel threw everything he had at Morishima but in the end Morishima wins after 2 back drop drivers.

Overall 9/10

Overall thoughts of the show:

A pretty decent show. No where near the best show of the year, but decent. A few really great matches and the rest of the card wasn’t too bad either. No real stinkers besides the two NOAH young boys and even that had some good wrestling in it.

Overall show rating: 7/10

1. Rocky Romero & Davey Richards beat Jack Evans & Kotaro Suzuki

2. Shuhei Taniguchi beat Akihiko Ito

3. Jimmy Rave beat BJ Whitmer

4. Bryan Danielson defeated Go Shiozaki

5. Delirious beat Roderick Strong in a Fight Without Honor

6. Naomichi Marufuji & The Briscoes defeated Matt Sydal, Ricky Marvin, & Atsushi Aoki

7. Takeshi Morishima beat Nigel McGuinness to retain the ROH World Title
